Whales watching Sri Lanka
There are over 26 types of cetaceans that can be seen off the coast of Sri Lanka, including blue whales, sperm whales, and fin whales. Blue whales are the most commonly spotted species in Sri Lankan waters. Some popular spots for whale-watching include Dondra Point, Mirissa, and Trincomalee.
Mirissa is a popular destination for whale and dolphin watching, with regular excursions departing from Mirissa Harbor at 7 am. These trips typically last for three to four hours, and during the high season, the chances of spotting whales and dolphins are over 90%.
For those looking for an alternative option, Trincomalee on the northeast coast also offers whale-watching tours starting at 6:30 am. The duration of these tours can vary depending on the sea conditions, but it usually takes up to 5 hours. In the north, the best time for whale watching is generally from July to September.
